HBO Max: How Do I Get it If I Already Have HBO?

[ad_1]

AT&T’s new streaming platform HBO Max went live on Wednesday, but for many HBO subscribers, it was not entirely clear whether they had access to the service.

Millions currently do not. That’s because AT&T could not strike deals in time for the launch with some key distributors and a few device makers. Only those who purchased HBO through the right distributor and have the approved device could watch HBO Max.

HBO Max costs the same as HBO ($15 a month) and is intended to convert HBO users to the new service, which offers twice as much content.

Confused? Here’s a handy guide:

  • For those who already pay for HBO through a traditional TV provider, you’re in luck. HBO Max hashed out agreements with most of the major players, including Comcast, the nation’s largest cable operator, thanks to a last-minute deal signed Wednesday. Those customers can download the app and sign in with their HBO Go or pay-TV account. (Here’s the full list of providers.)

  • But if you’re planning to watch on an Amazon Fire or Roku device, you’re out of luck. AT&T could not reach agreements with either. Both Amazon and Roku get a cut of revenue from streaming providers, and the structure of those deals can get complicated. Still, there are still plenty of places to download the app. Approved devices include Apple, Samsung TVs from 2016 and later, Xbox and Chromecast. Here’s the full list.

  • For those who bought their HBO service through a digital provider like Apple, Google Play, Hulu Live or YouTubeTV, you’re good to go. Log in to the HBO Max website or app with your HBO credentials. But the same device caveat as above applies.

  • For those who have HBO Now, you likely bought it directly from the HBO website. You should be all set. Just log in to the HBO Max website or app with the same account.

  • Anyone who bought HBO through Amazon Channels or a Roku device are shut out of HBO Max. Amazon and Roku provide both media access and sell devices, so they have two key areas over which to negotiate.

For consumers stuck in the middle, you can cancel your HBO account to sign up on the HBO Max website and watch through an approved device.

HBO Max Is Here to Take On Netflix. Is It Too Late?

Keeping Clients Fit During the Pandemic by Going Virtual

[ad_1]

“I took a deep breath,” she said.

She then began to think about how to keep her practice — usually done in studios or homes or on retreats — alive. She decided to take a stab at virtual teaching, even though she had no experience with it. Within a few days, Ms. Miller, 45, had downloaded the basic version of Zoom and set up lights and a camera in her home studio.

A test class for friends went well, Ms. Miller said, “so I thought, ‘Let’s open it up to a larger audience.’” She sent emails to students, new and old, inviting them to a Sunday morning class on March 29. “Just before we started the class, we reached 100, which was the limit for my version of Zoom,” she says. “I had to upgrade to Zoom Pro two minutes before the class started.”

Now, her Sunday classes average 135 participants, compared with an average of 30 to 35 before. Students log in from across the country, as well as Mexico, France and Austria.

“I’ve grown my business in a way I would have never expected,” she said.

For Travis Macy, an endurance-sports coach in Evergreen, Colo., the challenge was not solvable with a technology reboot. “It’s less of a supply issue, and more of demand,” Mr. Macy said. “All the races my clients were training to do have been canceled.”

Mr. Macy thought about how he could create new demand for his niche business. “We’re now saying, ‘OK, so if such and such a race isn’t happening this year, is there a cool mission or journey you’d like to take?’” he said. “‘Something meaningful to you?’”

He found clients eager to develop and prepare for such personal challenges. One plans to ride the Colorado Trail — 485 miles from Denver to Durango, through the Rocky Mountains — on a mountain bike. Another has expressed interest in a bike-riding tour of the West this summer with his wife. Others are planning to compete in virtual races.

“It’s highly individualized,” said Mr. Macy, who charges a monthly retainer for his services. “My role now is to help with identifying the goal, planning and guiding the client’s training and maybe helping with the route and gear.”

Everything You Need to Know About Slow Internet Speeds

[ad_1]

Restricted to our homes for months now, many of us have been putting up with a persistent annoyance: a lousy internet connection.

When we are working, a video call with colleagues becomes pixelated, with delayed audio. When we are relaxing, movies and video games take ages to download. In the worst cases, the connection drops altogether.

As people have hunkered down to contain the spread of the coronavirus, average internet speeds all over the world have slowed. Some broadband providers are feeling crushed by the heavy traffic. And dated internet equipment can create a bottleneck for our speeds.

Even the most tech savvy are affected. Keerti Melkote, the founder of Aruba Networks, a division of Hewlett Packard Enterprise that offers Wi-Fi products for businesses, said that in recent weeks, his DSL service from AT&T had dropped periodically. He waited several days for a technician to arrive and is now contemplating subscribing to Comcast for a second internet connection.

“I had three or four days of calls, and I had to go find a particular spot in my house where I had better coverage,” Mr. Melkote said.

At the beginning of the pandemic, my internet also became unbearably slow and suffered several outages. So I asked experts to explain what’s causing our internet problems — and the different remedies.

What’s causing your slow speeds — your internet provider or your equipment at home? Here’s a method to figuring that out.

  • Download an internet speed test app on your phone, like Speedtest by Ookla (free for iPhones and Android phones).

  • Stand near your router and use the app to run a speed test.

  • Move to a room farther away from the router and run the speed test again.

  • Compare the results.

Less than 15 megabits a second is pretty slow. Speeds of about 25 megabits a second are sufficient for streaming high-definition video; more than 40 megabits a second is ideal for streaming lots of video and playing video games.

If the speed test results were fast near your Wi-Fi router but slow farther away, the problem is probably your router, said Sanjay Noronha, the product lead of Google’s Nest Wifi internet router. If speeds were slow in both test locations, the issue is probably your internet provider.

If you have pinpointed that the problem is your router, the bad news is that you may have to buy new equipment. The good news is that there are many approaches to improving your Wi-Fi connection.

Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • How old is my router? If it’s more than five years old, you should definitely replace it. In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission removed restrictions that had limited the wireless transmission power of Wi-Fi routers, allowing new routers to be 20 times more powerful than they were before. Upgrading to a newer router will probably be one of your most life-changing tech purchases.

  • Where is my router placed? Ideally, your router should be in a central location in your home so that the signal covers as many rooms as possible. In addition, your router should be out in the open, like on top of a shelf, not hidden inside cabinets or under a desk, to beam a clear signal. You should also avoid placing the router near objects and materials that cause interference, like large fish tanks and metal.

  • How big is my home? If you have a home with multiple stories and lots of rooms, and your Wi-Fi is weak in some areas, the best solution is to buy a so-called mesh network system. It’s a system of multiple Wi-Fi access points, including a main router and satellite hubs, that lets you connect multiple wireless access points together to blanket your home with a strong internet connection.

My favorite mesh systems are Google Wifi and Amazon’s Eero, which start at $99 for a single router and can be bundled with additional access points. In general, I recommend mesh systems even for smaller homes, because they are fast and very easy to install.

  • Are my other devices slowing down my connection? Gadgets with slower internet technology can slow down speeds for all your other devices.

For example, the iPhone 5 from 2012 uses an older-generation Wi-Fi standard. Newer iPhones, from 2014 and later, use a faster wireless standard.

Let’s say you own a new iPhone and your teenager owns the iPhone 5. If your teenager begins downloading a video on the iPhone 5 and then you start downloading something on your iPhone, the older phone will take longer to finish before the signal frees up for your phone to download at maximum speed.

As a remedy, many modern Wi-Fi routers offer settings that can give specific devices a priority for faster speeds. Consult your router’s instruction manual for the steps. In this hypothetical example, you would want to give your new iPhone top priority and move your teenager’s old iPhone to the bottom.

  • Are my neighbors slowing down my connection? In apartment buildings crowded with gadgets, the devices’ signals are fighting for room on the same radio channels. You can see what radio channels your neighbors’ devices are using with scanning apps like WiFi Analyzer. Then consult your router’s instruction manual for steps on picking a clearer radio channel.

This step is tedious, and many modern routers automatically choose the clearest radio channel for you. In general, replacing an outdated router is the most practical solution.

If you have determined that your internet provider’s service is the root of the issue, your only option is to call your internet service provider and ask for help.

When you call, ask a support agent these questions:

  • Why are my speeds slow? Occasionally a support agent can analyze your internet performance and make changes to speed up your connection. This rarely happens, and more often a technician will need to pay a visit.

  • Does my modem need to be replaced? The modem, which is the box that connects your home to the internet provider’s service, also can become outdated and occasionally needs to be replaced. If the support agent confirms the modem is old, you can schedule an appointment for a technician to install a new one.

Or you can buy your own modem and call the internet provider to activate it. Wirecutter, our sister publication that tests products, recommends modems from Motorola and Netgear, which cost about $80 to $90.

  • Can I buy faster speeds? Your provider may offer packages with more bandwidth meant for higher-quality video streaming and faster downloads. Ask about your options.

As a last resort, you can turn to backups. Many modern phones come with a hot spot feature, which turns the device’s cellular connection into a miniature Wi-Fi network. (Apple and Google list steps on their websites on how to use the hot spot feature on iPhones and Androids.)

Whatever you do, be patient. In these trying times, everything takes longer.

As for me, I confirmed my slow speeds were related to my internet provider, Monkeybrains. I called to report the issue, and after more than a month, a technician replaced the antenna on our roof. Now my speeds are even faster than before the pandemic, so it was well worth the wait.

8 wordpress plugin that will surely skyroket your SEO.

- WordPress made it easy for anyone to create a website. It;s easy to use, it;s fast, it doesn;t requirea lot of technical knowledge.Heck, even someone like me who;s not a developercan do things like SEO and modify WordPress with a breeze.Hey everyone, I;m Rajin Sharwar and todayI;m gonna cover the perfect SEO setup for WordPress, eight plugins to skyrocket your ratings and traffic.
Some of the most important factors that Google looks into in order to rank your site are some of the following, user experience, on-page SEO, site speed,mobile-friendliness, internal link structure, structured markups, all these things impact your ranking, and there;s hundreds of other factors. There;s over 200 factors that Google includes in their algorithm, and today I;m gonna share with you some plugins that;ll help you do all of these things, plus more,in a really easy and controlled way.

#W3 TOTAL CACHE

Plugin number one, W3 Total Cache.Look, load time is super important, especially because people are using mobile devices now.Yes, there;s 4G, there;s 5G, you know,LTE, whatever you wind up calling it,but the problem with mobile devices is if you;re in a place that doesn;t have the best receptionI don;t care if you have a 5G phone, you;re not gonna load websites really fast. The W3 Total Cache plugin, it ensures that your sitewill load as fast as you possibly can. It;ll improve load times, it;ll help you connect with CDNs,it makes better use of your server resourcesso that way your server doesn;t have to continueto push the same content over and over again.Instead it caches it so it can deliver it to the user as quick as possible, and if you have a really good hosting providerthey have caching built in,but most of the hosting providersthat I;ve seen don;t have caching built in,hence I;m wrecking, recommending the W3 Total Cache plugin.

#SMUSH IMAGE COMPRESSION.

Another plugin that you need to check outis the Smush Image Compression plugin. If you;re creating blog content, and hey, you;re on a WordPress blog, or WordPress as a CMS,there;s a good chance you at leasthave a blog article or two,and in that blog article what do you think you;re including?Images, if you;re not you should change that and go add images right away. The Smush Image Compression plugin, what this does is ensures that your images still look really good and quality,so that way when someone looks at them they don;t look all pixelated and fuzzy, they still look really sharp, but this decreases the size of the image in which I;m talking about the server size, right, that hard drive space that it;s taking up,so when people ping your site it loads much faster.

#YOAST SEO.

The third plugin that you have to use is a Yoast SEO plugin. It does everything from on-page optimization, controlling your meta tags, your title tags.It even analyzes your content, telling you if you;re doing a good job or a bad job.It creates sitemaps for you, helps with structure and markup. It does pretty much what most things that you need if you want to ensure that your WordPress blog is SEO-friendly.Now look, WordPress out of the box is pretty SEO-friendly,but this plugin puts those last, final touches that are really important. Most people think like, Oh yeah.If I do most of the things, that;s fine. No, that used to work five, six years ago, but SEO has changed. Now Google wants you to do every little thing right, and when you combine them all that;s when you seethe climb in ranking, the extra search traffic, and this plugin will really help you get there.

#SUCURI

The fourth plugin is Sucuri. If your website gets hacked, you rankings and traffic will tank, and when it tanks and you fix it it;s hard to recover.Sucuri helps you, helps prevent you from getting hacked. Now, it;s not gonna be perfect, but it;s better than nothing. The last thing you want to do is getyour site hacked and lose all your traffic.I;ve seen this time and time again, someone gets hacked and they figure it outafter a week or two, their rankings tank, they fixed it, and they don;t recover in 30 days.Eventually they recover, sometimes it takes two months, sometimes three months, if they;re lucky it happens quickly. And they;re like, Hey, my business is in the shitter.I;m losing a lot of money all because of this one silly thing.Make sure you don;t get hacked.

#AMP FOR WORDPRESS

The fifth plugin, AMP for WordPress. This helps with mobile users.Look, if you want to rank really highyou want to get in on Google News, you want to make sure that your site has the AMP framework. In other words, your tech space articles loads really fast,Google just posts it on their end, they;re leveraging their own framework, and I found that yeah, in the United Statesby leveraging the AMP frameworkI didn;t really get much more mobile traffic, but other countries where mobile devicesand infrastructure isn;t as good, such as Brazil,I saw a huge increase in mobile trafficby just leveraging this plugin.

#A3 LAZY LOAD

The sixth plugin for you is a3 Lazy Load. When you use images on your site, even when you compress them,it still takes time for that webpage to load. You want to make it where thoseimages load as people scroll, that way you;re not just loading up all these imageson a page and it takes forever for that webpageto load when people haven;t evenstarted reading the content and scrolling. That;s why I like Lazy Load.If you;re on the techfreeks.xyz siteyou;ll notice that as you read my blog postsimages load as you scroll. This creates a better experience for you as a user, and search engines prefer this as well.

#ALL IN ONE SCHEMA RICH SNIPPETS.

The seventh plugin, All In One Schema Rich Snippets. If you want to improve your search visibility by sharing rich snippets between the page title, you gotta use this plugin. It;s great, it;s simple to use,it is one of the best things that I;ve done out there. Now, with schema markup what you;ll findis some people are like, Yeah, we;re gonna useall this schema markup and use all these tagseven though our site isnt relevant to the specific schema markups. You don;t want to do that. For example, I wouldn;t be using stuff on techfreeks.xyz,a schema markup that;s relevant for restaurants when I have nothing related to restaurants on my site. That;ll irritate Google and it;ll hurt you in the long run,so when you;re using this be nice and kind.Don;t try to abuse schema markup.

#REALLY SIMPLE SSL

The eighth plugin, Really Simple SSL.90% of websites that rank at the top have SSL installed. It;s pretty much become a prerequisiteif you want to rank well, so use the SSL.Now, it doesn;t have to be through this plugin.Maybe your host provides it,maybe your domain provider provides it,whatever it may be you want a secure site, and what you;ll find is some browsers even notify users, saying Hey, this site isn;t secure, and that;ll cause people to bounce back, get away from your site, and over timethat could decrease your rankings. You want to make sure you have SSL, it;s that important.

So, use these eight plugins, you;ll find that your rankings will start going up over time, especially if you haven;t used any of them, but when you start combining all of the mit does help quite a bit.If you have any questions leave a comment below.Let me know what your question is about WordPress or these plugins and I;ll answer it.

The Joy of Deleting My Many Mediocre Photos

[ad_1]

Like Frankenstein’s creature, they trail us across time and terra. Let’s set ourselves free.

“I wear the chain I forged in life,” the ghost of Jacob Marley once complained to a former co-worker. “I made it link by link, and yard by yard.” I know exactly what he was talking about — I have several thousand mediocre to wretched photos saved on my smartphone, and I carry them with me at all times.

The mediocre to wretched photos were created by me, and, like the mediocre to wretched humanoid creature created by Victor Frankenstein, they trail their maker across time and terra.

The worst of them — worse than hundreds of sunsets, captured over five years and demonstrating an artistic technique that never improves; worse than dozens of close-up common garden flowers I intended to circle back to and identify; worse than the image that my phone’s built-in object detection classified as “Sunset Sunrise” but which was, in fact, a hotel bed headboard with recessed lighting behind it (why?) — are the thousands of screenshots that divulge my poorest traits and inclinations.

A dropped pin on Google Maps means I wanted to research the value of a stranger’s home. Someone else’s Instagram post is evidence that a party was bad. Celebrities arguing online is proof that I, like one of hell’s minor demons, am thrilled by the strife of others. Most damning are the screenshots that reveal how much of my life is spent fiddling with my phone without my noticing: Accidental images of my lock screen multiply like bacteria.

So when, a few days ago, with nothing but nothing to do, I received the rude complaint from my phone that it was nearly out of storage, I began deleting. Moving in reverse chronological order, it was obvious why I never perform this chore; it’s fatiguing to relive the recent past.

The easiest and most satisfying approach, I discovered, was to utilize the object recognition feature that had mistaken hotel furniture for the disappearance of the sun below the earth’s horizon. Typing letters at random reliably generated a new odd category of photos to evaluate. “G-A-R” prompted “Garland,” and how many photos of “Garland” did I need? (Two of 11.) “W-A” produced three wash basins unidentifiable to me. “B” was difficult. Of course I love my friends’ babies, but I really didn’t need 98 photos of them, especially considering some were actually dolls.

Will I ever again recall my trip to the shopping area of Epcot’s United Kingdom Pavilion, now that the photographic record of it has been wiped clean? Perhaps not. But saving a dark, faraway shot of cracker boxes on a wooden table forever was not a healthy choice. For well over an hour I deleted, clawing back several gigabytes of space. I felt productive. I felt lighter. I had room for new screenshots.

The Joy of a Junky Old Nintendo

[ad_1]

Why Super Mario Bros. brought me to tears.

One evening, a few weeks ago, at 8 p.m., my husband and I put our young daughter to bed as usual. At 8:01 p.m., I was scheduled to begin the crying hour, in which I burst into tears from the stress and headlines and death toll stats of the day.

My scheduled activity was disrupted by noisy rummaging sounds coming from our den closet; a minute later, my husband emerged holding our old Nintendo Entertainment System console, its black wires and controllers dangling like tentacles.

It is a wonderfully junky, circa 1986 set, a prize scored in a fierce eBay battle against nine other aggressive bidders; the cartridges have to be jiggled into the deck at a weird angle to work at all. I ran into our kitchen, and returned with a bottle of Cutty Sark and two tumblers.

If you saw me on the street, you likely wouldn’t peg me for a Nintendo aficionado, but I am, under all the eyeliner. My family bought our first Nintendo when I was in middle school; we all became addicted. I was especially obsessed with The Goonies II. My brother was a Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! man. My mother — then balancing law school with raising three unruly offspring — used to disappear into Dr. Mario late at night. It was better than meditation, she swore.

Super Mario Bros. was my husband’s game choice on the evening in question. We opted for a one-player game, and passed the only working controller back and forth between us. I usually have a memory like a sieve, but somehow my brain has, for three decades, dutifully stored the location of every Super Mario Bros. hidden cloud world, warp zone and secret green-mushroom-extra-life in that whole damn game. Every note of the game music was pure familiarity. It too must have been coursing along in my blood stream all of these years.

At some point, as we played, I realized that tears were rolling down my face after all, but this time out of sheer happiness. I’d been completely transported back to my 12-year-old self in what we later called the Nintendo Summer.

Our family games then were interspersed with pool swimming until our lungs hurt; making string friendship bracelets that turned chlorine-green by the end of the summer; scorching marshmallows over a charcoal grill — an especially tasty carcinogenic 1980s treat; making mix tapes on a candy-pink double-deck cassette player.

My husband has continued to administer Nintendo doses to me on bad-news days. It’s always a curative diversion, not least of all because your hands are occupied, rendering you temporarily incapable of scrolling through the latest ghastly news developments on Twitter.

It’s ironic that, back in that Nintendo Summer, all I had wanted to do was grow up. And now, one of my greatest comforts comes from being that braces-wearing, dorky girl again, leaping triumphantly past fire-breathing dragons and hammer-throwing turtles.

The Joy of Perfecting the Sexy Selfie

[ad_1]

Some people are raising little sourdough bread children. I am learning photography. Learning is learning.

In a memorable episode of “30 Rock,” Tracy Jordan says: “I’m just going through the classic stages of grief: fear, denial, horniness, wisdom, sleepiness and now depression.” My therapist really had done his very best to explain to me that the collective loss of normalcy we were all experiencing was rooted in grief, but nothing — absolutely nothing — prepared me for the horniness.

Overnight, we New Yorkers had retreated into our homes and our lives changed forever. Week 1 hit me the hardest. Lots of tears. I obsessively looked up the dictionary definition of “quarantine,” as if there was an answer to be found there.

Week 2 was no better, but by Week 3 I was sleeping through the night again. A friend told me over FaceTime, “There is no going back to normal. We live like this now.” Instead of terrifying me, those words had the opposite effect.

The pandemic vibes were bad, but I was starting to understand what the dictionary had not elucidated for me: We live like this now. I was submitting to the tedium and the vastness of the moment. Coincidentally that is also when all of the horniness started.

By Week 4, it seemed like I had heard from almost all of my old lovers and failed hookups. The world’s falling apart? Check on your exes! Check on your long-lost friends with benefits! Check on anyone you had failed to make out with in the Before times. It all felt very civilized and grown-up. That is, until it started feeling thirsty.

Normally thirst is a big turnoff for me, but I don’t know if you’ve heard that we are in a pandemic. We live like this now. And so just like that, the text messages went from “hey babe thinking of u hope u r doing ok” to “what r u wearing?” Yes, some men are still typing like this. In. A. Pandemic. Sadly, heterosexual relationships are still in shambles and that consistency is weirdly comforting to me right now.

I can’t tell you which text it was that compelled me to Google the words “how to take a butt selfie,” but I do not regret it. The internet is magnanimous with this kind of advice. I have since learned that butt selfies are called “belfies” in the United States and “bum selfies” in Britain. God bless.

I have learned that butt selfies require charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent (deep bow to “Drag Race”). I have learned that there’s not a standard belfie pose but that if you lie down on your stomach and arch your back enough to make your butt pop out, those pictures look really good.

I have learned that you can twist your body enough that your shoulders and hips are aligned, and those pictures also look really good. This is all very hard work, but practice makes perfect. Some people are raising little sourdough bread children. I am learning photography. Learning is learning. New skills are new skills.

In the Before times, I would be embarrassed to discuss this, but nothing — truly nothing — has brought me more laughs and joy. We live like this now.

What Pandemic Scams Are People Falling For

[ad_1]

“The number of sites and stores that popped up all over the place has increased,” said Ron Culler, a senior director of technology and solutions for the security firm ADT Cybersecurity. Shortly after the government began issuing stimulus checks, he said, scammers registered 15,000 fake websites posing as the I.R.S. to steal people’s personal and financial information.

Here are a few measures to protect yourself from fraudulent websites:

  • Check the website’s URL. A phony site may look identical to a government or banking website, but the domain name in the address bar is a giveaway of a fake. Click on your address bar and look for domains ending in “com.co,” “.ma” or “.co” instead of more legitimate domains like “.com” or “.org.”

  • Install an ad blocker. To prevent your browser from loading a shady ad seeking your personal information, you can download an ad-blocking extension for your browser. For computer browsers, I recommend uBlock Origin, and on iPhones I recommend 1Blocker X.

Robocallers have a reputation for sounding dumb, but in reality, they work hard for your money and are resourceful.

They do their homework on you and adapt to your responses. Most of the time, they “spoof” phone numbers, manipulating phone networks to ring your phone from numbers they aren’t actually calling from — including digits that belong to your bank or a government agency.

In extreme cases, two scammers work together — one is on the phone with your bank while the other is on the phone with you — asking you for personal information so they can immediately trick the bank’s customer support agent into granting access to your account.

“What they’re looking for is any crack in the system,” Mr. Espinosa said. High-risk calls to financial institutions are 50 percent higher than before the pandemic, according to his company, which tracks the number of potentially fraudulent calls being made to businesses. One bank is getting 6,000 more high-risk calls per hour, he said.

So here’s what to do:

  • Hang up the phone and call back. Robocallers have been a nuisance for years, but now more than ever, we should be wary of any call from a business or an organization. If, for example, your bank calls with a fraud alert, hang up and call the customer service number on the back of your credit card and ask your bank whether it truly tried to call you.

  • Remove businesses from your address book. A saved entry in your address book could give you false confidence that a call is legitimate. Let’s say you have Citibank’s support number saved in your address book and labeled it “Citibank.” If a fraudster spoofed Citibank’s support number and called you, your smartphone would show that a call is coming in from Citibank. It’s best to delete these phone book entries so scammers don’t catch us off guard.

Phishing, in which a scammer impersonates someone to ask for your personal information, is one of the oldest internet scams. But it still happens because it works.

Fraudsters have adapted to the ever-changing news cycle in the pandemic. In emails and texts, they have worn several disguises, pretending to be the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Internal Revenue Service and more, according to ADT.

What is SEO?Rank 1st - 3rd in Google by following these super cool steps.

Today,we&;ll cover what SEO is and how you can use it to increase traffic to your blog. One of the best ways to do that is to optimize your site for search engines and in this series, we&;ll cover everything you need to know to get started with SEO and by following the tips in this article, you could easily add 1,000 more visitors to your website in a month. So let&;s dive in. If you&;ve done research on how to increase traffic to your website, you&;ve probably seen everybody talking about "Improve your SEO" on your site but what does that really mean? Seo stands for Search Engine Optimization or just how easy it is for Google to find your website.
Now there are several different search engines out there. You have things like Bing and Yahoo,Yandex but 90% of searches are done on Google. So that&;s usually what we&;re talking about when we say search engines and basically, search engines just go out and scour the web to find pages and index them in their catalog. It&;s very similar to when you have a book and at the end of the book you have an index where it tells you where everything was talked about and the location. That&;s pretty much Google and their indexing systemas well on the web in the cloud.
So let&;s take a look at an example. Now, this is a typical search page with results. You can see that these are ads, this is what&;s known as a knowledge graph and what it&;s doing is it&;spulling in a result that might be further down on the page but since Google thinks it&;s answering the query really well it&;ll get shown up hereas well as down further on the page. Then below all of that, you have organic results. Typically they&;re about ten organic results on one page and organic listings simply mean that these results aren&;t paid at all. They show up on Google because they&;ve done a good job of telling Google that this page is about this particular query. Then you have a people also ask area and this simply shows the related searches that people will do on this topic. Now, fewer than ten percent of people will actuallyever click on the next page. If they don&;t find what they&;re looking for on the first pagethey&;ll simply adjust their search criteria and that&;s why Googleadded in this &;People Also Asked&; area and here&;s the biggest why SEOis so important for your website. These top three organic results, they get over 70% of all the clicks. This first position usually gets the bulk of the clicks. Between 35% and 40%.The second will get between 15% and 20% and then the third position willget around 10%. So, that&;s why it&;s so important to make sure thatyour website is first on Google.
But, how does Google even determine what should go on the first page? The biggest factor is relevancy. You want to make sure that your website is exactly what the searcher is looking for when they&;re searching Google. Now Google uses over 200 factors to determine what&;s relevant in their algorithms and there&;s no way that we&;re goingto be able to cover all of those but if we can concentrate on a few then we have a fighting chance to get seen in the search results. In addition to relevance you&;ll also want to make sure that your site is useful. All that means is that when a user clicks on your site, the information that they&;re looking for is easily found.
Think about the last time you did a search. If you went to a page that you thought had the answer but you had a hard time finding it on the page, did you stick around? Most people will clickback and go look for a different answer. So make sure that your site is also useful and that you&;ve arranged the answers for the topic in a meaningful way that&;s easier for readers to find whatthey&;re looking for. So there are two main ways that you can work on SEO on your website and they&;re called on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
On-Page SEO is simply telling Google and the reader that you have everything that they&;re looking for. You have all the indicators that they&;re looking for and really, this just means you have all the right keywords on your site. Now,on-page SEO is easier to deal with because most of the changes needed are within your control. For instance, if your site is about barbeque then you want to make sure that your site has the right keywords in the title,in the body, in the image descriptions, it also means you have supportingkeywords in it like BBQ recipes, grill temperatures, types of meat, bestBBQ grills and everything else that is related to that topic.
Throughout this article we&;ll cover all the ways that you can do on-page SEO so you canget started soon. And the cool thing is, if you already have a website with some articles on it then you may be just a few tweaks away from seeing massive results with your traffic. Without writing any new content.
With Off-Page SEO, that simply means that you are making sure that other websites are linking back to you. These are called backlinks. Off-Page SEO is a little bit more out of your control because you&;re relying on other peopleto believe that your site is worthy of a link but if you&;re writing great content and networking with your industryor your topic area then it shouldn&;t be a problem. Now I just want to let you know, as we go through this SEO process, just realize that search engine optimization does take time and sometimes it can be a little frustratingwhen you&;re not seeing the results fast. But if done properly, the results from your SEO efforts can last months or even years dependingon the topic you&;re in.
So now that you know a little bit about what SEO is and how it can improve the traffic on your site, in the upcoming articles we&;ll go a little bit deeper into on-page SEO and we&;ll cover keyword research and how to do it properly for your website.

Why Apple’s iPad Is the Gadget of the Pandemic

[ad_1]

In a flatlining economy, the $399 iPhone that Apple introduced last week might sound attractive. But there’s a better gadget deal in the pandemic: the iPad.

Remember the iPad? You would be forgiven if you had forgotten.

Apple unveiled a new entry-level model of the tablet computer last year for $329. Yet it barely got a mention at the company’s glitzy product event in September, when Apple highlighted new iPhones that cost $699 to $1,099. The iPad, which always seemed like an optional accessory sitting between your computer and smartphone, has long been treated as that “other” device.

Now it’s time for us to reconsider the iPad. Last week, I wrote about how the coronavirus had revealed our most essential tech and weeded out the excess. The tech we have turned to over and over boils down to a computing device, communication tools, entertainment and an internet connection. The iPad delivers on all of those needs even better than a smartphone.

With a bigger screen than an iPhone, the iPad excels at videoconferencing with apps like FaceTime and Zoom, and it’s great for watching movies and programs on Netflix and YouTube. When you attach it to a good keyboard, it becomes an excellent budget computer with a zippy internet connection for browsing the web, writing emails and composing documents. All for half the price of a regular iPhone.

“It’s really in that sweet spot of being relatively affordable and having everything I think most people will need,” said Nick Guy, a writer for Wirecutter, a New York Times publication that tests products.

So even though Apple is releasing its new iPhone SE this week, with its sped-up internals and a better camera than its predecessor, now may not be the ideal time to buy one. After all, what good is an improved camera if you can’t leave the house?

It’s tough to recommend buying any tech in the coronavirus outbreak, actually. But if your gadgets are failing to fulfill your needs in any of the aforementioned areas and you have the money to spend, an iPad is one of the few products I can endorse for its practicality. (Apple declined to comment on this column.)

I picked up an iPad for a $100 discount last Black Friday. Over the past few weeks, it has been my go-to device. Here’s why I’m naming it the gadget of the pandemic.

I’ve never been much of a video chatterer, but the pandemic has forced just about all of us to use videoconferencing with the people we care about and work with.

Initially, I preferred doing video calls on my office-provided laptop because the screen angle could be adjusted. But after about a week, I realized that video calls on a laptop were a lousy experience. They are a power sucker; a half-hour call on Google Hangouts used 25 percent of my laptop battery.

What’s more, security researchers have found that Zoom, the most popular video chatting app, has major security vulnerabilities on computers but not on mobile devices like the iPad. That’s because mobile apps operate in a more restricted environment with limited access to your data.

This made me eventually shift all my video calls to the iPad, which was by far a better experience. The iPad has much longer battery life than a laptop. And compared with a smartphone, the tablet has a big screen for video calls and can easily be propped up with a protective cover.

My wife and I recently used an iPad for a two-hour FaceTime call with my brother-in-law while we played a video game together. At the end of the session, the iPad still had more than 70 percent of its battery remaining.

After I started doing video calls on the iPad, many of my work tasks also began shifting over to the tablet, including composing email, taking notes and even doing expenses. I appreciated the device’s prolonged battery life and preferred the way apps took up the full screen, which helped me concentrate on tasks.

Not all credit goes to the iPad alone. The gadget has only a virtual keyboard, and using it to type on a slab of glass is no fun.

Fortunately, I had researched several iPad keyboards before the pandemic and settled on the $100 Logitech Slim Folio keyboard, which was simple to attach. Typing on it feels the same as using a normal keyboard, and its case protects the tablet while propping it up.

I still do most of my writing on the laptop because the software is more suitable for multitasking. But I can do a surprising amount of my job on the tablet thanks in large part to finding the right keyboard.

I normally read lots of books, but lately I’ve been in the mood to shut off my brain by reading comics. The Comixology and Comic Zeal apps on the iPad make digital comics a better experience than reading in print: You can zoom in on individual panels, plus the screen is bright enough that you won’t need to turn on a reading lamp.

While I prefer watching video on a television screen, it has been nice to have an iPad to stream an HBO show while my wife is using the television to watch “Love Is Blind.”

I also now spend several hours a day watching YouTube videos about everything from baking to D.I.Y. home improvement. Thanks to this new obsession, I finally optimized homemade pizza dough, learned how to install a part in my motorcycle and even managed to install a bidet for my toilet. The iPad has been a great video-playing companion through this journey.

So why the iPad and not another tablet computer? After all, many of the same tasks can be done on cheaper tablets, like Amazon’s $50 Fire HD 8.

Yet those other devices are generally much slower and have inferior screens. The iPad is ultimately the best tablet on the market.

There are just two caveats, both of which add to the gadget’s price. The first is that a keyboard drives its cost up an extra $100. The second is that I recommend more storage (128 gigabytes instead of 32) to carry more apps and games, which adds another $100.

That brings the total to $529.

Don’t let that put you off. The iPad is still cheaper than most iPhone models and a better value than just so-so laptops from Lenovo, Dell and HP, which cost about $500.

Ryne Hager, an editor for the tech blog Android Police, said he bought an iPad for his girlfriend last Christmas and noticed that she was using it more frequently during the lockdown to video chat with her family. The device’s ease of use and value were so compelling that he broke the Android Police site’s tradition of writing exclusively about Android products and wrote an article about why people should buy an iPad for the pandemic.

“In a thousand little ways it offers a much better experience,” he said about the Apple tablet. “It’s kind of invaluable right now.”

Apple iPhone SE Review: A Superb Smartphone for a Humble Price

[ad_1]

For what it’s worth, the shots I took in daylight of my corgi, Max, on the SE looked just as good as similar shots with the iPhone 11 and other phones on the market, like Google’s $399 Pixel 3A. They came out crisp with natural-looking colors and nice shadow detail.

The other feature that makes the SE cheaper is the first thing you will look at: the screen.

At 4.7 inches, the display is smaller than the jumbo 6.1-inch screen on the iPhone 11. But that may be a benefit. The 4.7-inch size is better suited to one-hand use, so it’s easy to use your thumb to reach from the home button to each corner of the screen. Also important, the phone’s smaller body fits more comfortably in a pocket.

The SE’s second big cost saver is the use of a home button for unlocking the device, rather than the face scanners seen on modern smartphones. The iPhone fingerprint scanners have always worked quickly and reliably, and so does this one.

It might be nice to have a face scanner, but many of us will probably be happy without the feature if it means saving some money. For comparison, I have given big minus points to $1,000 phones, like the Samsung Galaxy S10, for a lousy fingerprint reader and a subpar face scanner.

To fully understand the SE’s value, it’s important to note that this isn’t Apple’s first rodeo with a cheaper iPhone. Those past models were not as compelling when compared with their pricier counterparts. To wit:

  • The $549 iPhone 5C, introduced in 2013, came in colorful plastic and felt cheaper and slower than the iPhone 5S, the model with a sleek aluminum body that cost $100 more.

  • The $399 iPhone SE from 2016 had the design of older iPhones, with the same computing power as newer ones at the time. Yet that SE had a notably inferior camera and dimmer screen than its $649, bigger-screen counterpart at the time, the iPhone 6S.

This time, the new SE’s trade-offs seem trivial. No face scanner, shooting photos in the dark or humongous screen? Those are minor inconveniences when you are paying 40 percent less than for an iPhone 11.

I will note one big downside: The SE has significantly shorter battery life than the iPhone 11.

After a day of shooting photos and juggling work tasks, the SE battery needed to be replenished by dinnertime. With the more expensive phone, I had more than 25 percent battery by bedtime. So people who work long hours and rely on their phones would probably be happier with a high-end one.

I’m not the target demographic for the SE since I’m willing to pay for fancier features. I splurged on the $999 iPhone XS two years ago because I loved taking portrait photos of food and my dogs.
